 What to expect

Consultation

On your first visit you will be ask you to fill in a form to give information that may help with the diagnoses and management of your condition. Once completed, your Chiropractor will start a consultation. This will include several questions to help determine the nature of your condition and whether Chiropractic care is the most appropriate for it. Some of these questions may appear irrelevant, but they are important in determining the nature of your condition. Occasionally you may be referred to your GP or relevant specialist if Chiropractic care appears not to be the best for you. Your details are of course confidential and no one will be allowed to see them without your permission.

The examination

Examination

Once your case history is complete, your Chiropractor will examine the relevant area to confirm any early ideas of your problem. The examination will focus on your neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints), but it may also be necessary to check other things such as your heart, lungs and abdomen to rule out other causes.

Gowns are available for you to wear for the examination and any treatment that may follow. It is very unlikely that there is a need to examine intimate areas, however if this is required, you will be referred to your GP.

It is normal for you to be asked to give your permission in the form of a signature before the examination, treatment and if any letter needs to sent to your GP or specialist.

The report of findings

After the examination is complete, your problem will be clearly explained to you. When treatment is required, this will also be explained together with the likely outcome of such treatment.

At this time it is often a good point to ask any questions that you may have. Once you are happy with everything, it is usual for a treatment to then be carried out on the same day.

Very occasionally further information from your GP may be required before any treatment commences, or you may be referred for an X-ray, MRI or CT scan. You will be told about this at this time.

Treatment

Chiropractic treatment varies depending upon the problem. It often involves specific adjustments and manipulations to free joints, realign the spine, and relieve symptoms. These are usually painless unless a high level of inflammation exists. Some of them require a short sudden movement done by the chiropractor’s hands. With these, it is not unusual for an audible ‘crack’ sound to be heard as the joint releases. Other adjustments involve flicks and stretches.

Muscles are also treated at Chiro Relief by massage techniques, medical acupuncture and stretching. Although often not the cause of the problem, by releasing tension in them, the condition can quickly settle.

Generally after the treatment you will feel much relief and a feeling of well-being. It is not unusual however to be a little sore the next day for several hours. When irritated nerves or inflammation are involved, your symptoms may initially appear worse; however this is uncommon and you will be explained about this beforehand.

Your Chiropractor may give you some self care advice. It may involve the use or heat or ice, supplements, exercises or some general lifestyle advice. Also at Chiro Relief, enough time is allowed per visit to avoid unnecessary additional visits. Often people have more than one complaint. These too can be treated in the same visit.
